Excerpt

Sirens wailed, growing louder.

A couple people in blue uniforms picked me up. Medics.

“You’re going to be just fine,” one said. “We’re going to get you onto this stretcher and take you into the ambulance. Just relax and let us take care of you.”

I mumbled and looked around.

Off to the side of all the onlookers stood a guy dressed in a black hoodie and black skinny jeans.

What was he doing there?

He wasn’t alone. Another guy dressed in black stood with him. Watching.

The medics set me on the stretcher and lifted me into the air.

I glanced around. My mom and sisters stood, unharmed. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Maybe they had survived. Their deaths, nothing more than a bad dream.

But they weren’t acting like they should have. They just watched the scene, sadness covering their faces.

They disappeared before my eyes.

I gasped.

A medic shushed me.

Where was my dad?

The two hooded figures headed toward our SUV.

I wanted to stop them, but couldn’t move.

“Hold still,” one of the medics told me. “You’ll feel a lot better once we get you to the hospital.”

My dad emerged from the vehicle.

The two hooded guys grabbed him and disappeared.

I sat up in bed, gasping for air. It hadn’t just been a dream.

They had my dad.
