It’s day eight and I’m learning the meaning of stamina. Hard to believe that in February, I struggled to write 2k a day. Now I’m writing about 6.5k words every day.
I’ve said for a long time that writing is like any other muscle, you have to work it to improve it. That was how I went from less than 2k a day when I was still working a day job to about 3-4k a day in about a month’s time after going full time.
Once I started writing that much, writing 6k became manageable – but not a daily basis. I hit it a few times, and then once even hit 7k in a day – and that wiped me out.
Now it’s the eighth day, and I’ve written over 6k five of those days. It’s challenging writing this much for so many days. Even if I know what I’m going to write.
One big takeaway from this is that when aiming for a writing goal, it’s better to focus on smaller goals. Looking at a goal of 6k can be daunting – to say the least. It helps to look at reaching the first 2k. Then 4k. But staring at the 6k can make it seem like it’s never going arrive.
If you have a writing goal that seems too big, break it down into smaller pieces. Focus on the 500 words you can write in x-amount of time. Then focus on the next 500. Small and manageable keeps you going.
