Writing while tired and in the midst of a cold is not fun…and takes a lot longer no matter how much effort you put into it.
Although, on the plus side, I managed to not fall behind today like I did last Friday. I hit exactly 6,000 words today and broke 50k for the month. That means that novel number one for the month is getting close to wrapping up.
I need to start plotting the next novel! I have a basic idea…very basic idea…of what I’m going to write for that one. I really need to get it outlined so I can hit the ground running.
Yesterday, I promised another fast-writing tip. It might sound weird, but one thing I’ve found that really helps is to focus on typing fast.
Well, duh, right?
Maybe, maybe not. What I’ve discovered is that when I just sit and type at a comfortable speed, I can get about 1k words in about 40 minutes. Maybe longer. Just kind of depends, really. With breaks and interruptions, that works out to about 1k an hour…which means 6 hours of writing.
But…if I really focus on typing fast…and therefore thinking fast…it all comes together so much better. The words flow out faster because there’s no time for the internal editor to interject. My fingers are ready to fly, and they do.
I literally type fast twice when I specifically focus on typing fast…that means 3 hours of writing, and being done for the day about the time my kids are up and ready to eat.
Seems basic, and probably is, but it’s so easy to overlook. It’s more comfortable to type at a relaxed speed and in a slower mode of thinking. But speed things up mentally and physically, and a lot more words will be written!
So, hope that helps. Tomorrow’s my day off. Phew.
