Day Twenty Six: 150k words in a Month #NaNoWriMo #My150NaNo

Apr26

With only four days left, I’ve written 126,152 words this month and am almost done with my second novel this month, too.

My original goal was to write two novels and a novella this month, but my first novel went a little long (see image below) and the one I’m writing now will go a little over, but I don’t think by much. I should finish it tomorrow when I write my six thousand words.

First book of the month, not too much over, but more than I usually go past my goal:

Apr15Given the fact that I left a pretty decent cliffhanger, I thought I’d write that one next instead of a novella. Now I’m not so sure. I really want to sit down and write a good outline before I start, and I don’t have time.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I should have outlined ALL the books I was planning on writing BEFORE the month started. I’m so busy with writing that I don’t have time to write a decent outline, which does take time.

One thing this month of writing 150k has taught me is the importance of spending time on all things writing, not just the actual writing.

To get a book out we need:

  • Outlining/plotting
  • Story beats
  • Reading the 1st draft
  • Self editing before sending to beta readers or critique partners
  • Taking breaks
  • Studying the craft
  • Reading books in and out of your genre
  • Spending time with other authors (online or off)
  • Going over beta / critique / editor feedback
  • Re-writes
  • Proofreading
  • Writing the blurb
  • Taking part in the cover creation process (I like DIY Book Covers)
  • Formatting (or hiring out) for paperback
  • Publishing (uploading to retailers)

…writing a book takes a LOT more than just writing!
