If We Were a Movie by Kelly Oram (Power of the Matchmaker #3)
Music meets Movies in this sweet college romance from the bestselling author of Cinder & Ella.
NYU freshman Nate Anderson is a triplet who is desperate to escape his wild and crazy brothers. After they screw things up for him one too many times, Nate flees his housing situation and takes the first available room for rent as far from his brothers as he can get.
Enter his new roommate Jordan–a quirky LA girl who believes that everything in life has already been done in the movies. In this heartfelt tale of love, friendship and family, Nate learns how to deal with his new adult life using Hollywood films as a guide.
I’ve read one other book in the Matchmaker series (Not Always Happenstance by Rachael Anderson). It’s an interesting way to create a series – each book is a standalone by a different author! The one thing that follows each book is the mysterious character, Pearl. I enjoyed her so much in the other book so much, I was excited to read another one.
If We Were a Movie was quite different from the other one – of course! A different author and different genre. I really did enjoy this one. It took me through a wide range of emotions and I found it hard to put down. I was excited to pick up my kindle and found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it.
The beginning drew me in right away. I really liked the opening and made me curious to know what was going to happen. The only thing was that I didn’t realize at first that it was from a guy’s point of view. Not that it put me off – it was fun and different to read a romance only from his POV.
I really enjoyed the movie references. What a fun and unique twist on the plot. Each chapter related to a movie, and that was really fun. I hadn’t seen about half of them, but that didn’t detract from the reading enjoyment at all. Everything was described well.
The slow-moving romance between Jordan and Nate was sweet and progressed well. I hated that he was so blind to it, but it was what it was. When they finally admitted their feelings for each other, it was awesome! So worth the wait. The ultimate perfect couple!
There were a few things that bugged me, though, and one thing that knocked it from a 5-star to a 4-star. I’m not going to spoil anything, so read on without worry. After Jordan and Nate finally reveal their feelings (and you think we’re finally going to get to see them having some happy moments together) everything gets blown out of the water. As a reader, I felt like it was a slap on the face. It came totally out of nowhere, and to make it worse was how Nate handled it. I actually had to step away from the book for a day or two. Everything worked out (exactly as I expected it to, given Sophie and her track record) and true to a romance, had a happily-ever-after. But for me, it just wasn’t the same after that whole fiasco.
This was my first book by the author, and I will probably read other books by her.
“Amazing concept with movies as chapters, and fantastic storyline.”
“I loved this story and was humming along to the songs from the book whilst reading. I can see this book becoming the movie it was written to be.”
“If We Were a Movie made me want to binge watch movies, listen to old playlists and re-read it all at once.”
