Jurisdiction may not sound like an exciting topic, but the conflict that arises when lines aren’t clear can be most interesting.
When the question of who should be in power arises, everyone has an opinion – and usually a strong one. Those already in power want to stay there, and won’t give up their position without a fight, sometimes to the death.
Things are no different for the vampire royalty. There are strict rules about who can lead the kingdom, although local leadership has more leeway.
The vampire king and queen have been on the throne for quite some time, and there are multiple plots to overthrow them. In both cases, those attempting to get rid of them are ones that the king and queen should be able to trust.
As mentioned earlier in this series of posts, the royal class of vampires are descendants of the Fyrsturae, the group of original vampires, born 3,000 years ago in Iceland. Also mentioned earlier is the fact that someone is going around bringing those vampires back from the dead.
You can probably see where this is going. They’re going to expect to be back in charge of the vampire kingdom, but will the current administration hand it over? Will the Fyrsturae even be ready to rule the world after being dead for a thousand years? Who should rule? Who will rule?

That’s going to be a bit of a stumbling block isn’t it. Ancestors are great when they’re dead, not so much when they turn up and demand your loyalty and obedience.

Ancestors are definitely better when they’re dead…especially when they’re power hungry!
That will be a hell of a conflict – those who once had the power and those who now have have vying for supremacy.
Sophie
So true! They both have equal rights to expect it.
I didn’t used to be a vampire fan until I read a friend’s books, The Blood Vine series by Amber Beldene. Now I’m hooked. I’m now intrigued with your series.
I’m a relatively new fan of vampires myself. I think that’s why I chose to write about them when I started writing fiction again. I wanted to create a world of vampires the way I thought it should be. 🙂
Oh the power struggles!
Power struggles make stories so much more interesting!
Sounds like someone will be in for disappointment, but the question is who…and how.
The how is the most interesting part of the equation!
The Vampires have so much structure… If someone comes along who doesn’t play by the rules – oh my! 😀

Yes – it can get complicated fast!
Jurisdiction is an interesting concept for worldbuilding. I hope in my worldbuilding series to eventually cover. In my AtoZ challenge, I slightly go over that with Balkanization.
What is your story about?
When I say worldbuilding series, I mean a series of articles dedicated to worldbuilding. I have 6 articles so far.
However, my next story is about Vampires in 1300’s Europe.
