Family Lines

Family lines can be quite interesting. If you’re like me, you love looking through pictures of days gone by. It doesn’t matter if they’re of my relatives or not, although that does make it more interesting. I had a great time finding the picture used for this post. I’m not saying it was easy….

I wanted an older picture of a happy family. People almost never smiled for photos back then. I’m told it’s because they were embarrassed by their crooked teeth, due to the lack of orthodontic care we take for granted.

Things were different in times past. In fact, my dad has a picture of his grandparents when they were engaged. She was sitting on his lap, but because they weren’t married, a board had to be placed between them for my great-grandma to sit on. That’s a far cry from the engagement photos of today!

Fyrsturae Lines

In Delphic Cove, where vampires are often seen but not recognized for their true nature, family lines are of the utmost importance. All descendants of the Fyrsturae (the original group of vampires) are royal vampires, a class far superior to the lowly common vampires – humans turned into vampires.

Within the royal class are varying levels. Those descended from Alrekur Vidarsson (the first vampire) are of the first line. Those descended from Halldor Falkursson (the second vampire) are of the second line, and so forth. If two parents of different lines have children, the children take the line of the highest ranking parent.

For the most part, the lines are primarily status symbols. Although when it comes to who is going to lead, especially on the throne, the lines are crucial. Not just any royal vampire can rule the throne, and meticulous care is taken when looking for the next king and queen.

Sometimes the lines are questioned. For instance, the last one who should have stepped up to be king gave up his position because he wanted to marry a common vampire. One of his children, a half-royal, has decided she wants to be on the throne, and would be more than happy to take out the current king and queen – her own father’s twin brother and his wife.

Family lines can be tricky, indeed.

Some of the ways things were done in the past are strange to me, but to them it was natural. Funny how just a generation or two can change everything around you.

    1. It really is amazing. I think that’s one reason I enjoy looking through old photos!

  2. When money or power is involved, family lines can be lethal. Your vampires in Delphic Cove sound very much like the Tudors, being at the top and trying to get to the top are dangerous things 🙂

You weren’t kidding about the photos, that one’s amazing.

    1. I couldn’t agree more! 🙂

  5. Stacy, I love the photo you found. Yes, when I think about it, in vintage family photos, most of the time they are not smiling.

    1. That’s why I love this one so much. I almost want to step back in time and hang out with them!

It sounds as if family connections amongst can be a bit dicey from time to time :).
My mother-in-law has some great photos from her family on glass slides – they are fascinating to look at.
