Eylin always seems to get herself into trouble, but this time she’s in deep. Missing. Kidnapped. Tortured.
Her friends and family have no idea where she is, and the only clue is the intolerable pain Ana is in. What Eylin feels, Ana does, too. And this time… it’s worse than ever.
And to make it even more frustrating, those casting locator spells say they can’t find her.
Will Eylin’s friends and family be able to find her in time?

Ana fell to the ground, writhing around. Her face scrunched up as if she were in great pain, but she wouldn’t scream. She rarely screamed, though I wished she would. I glanced over at the Queen and King, hoping they weren’t paying attention to her.
They were. Aunt Alexis had tears in her eyes, and Uncle Alre’s hand rested on her arm.
“Aunt Alexis—”
Uncle Alre put out a hand for me to stay quiet.
As I rose, my long black hair fell into my face as it always did. I slid it behind my ears and dug into my pockets, finding an elastic band. Quickly and without much care, I secured a ponytail.
Ana pulled herself onto a chair, grasping her arm and then her side. Tears rolled down her dirty face. My friend hadn’t managed a shower in months. That had been the last time she’d been able to do anything without pain and agony. It really only stopped long enough for her to sleep and recover. My chest tightened, pain consuming me. I’d never felt more alone in my life. Two of my best friends had been missing for months and almost that entire time, Ana, who I’d grown rather close to in the short time we’d known each other, had been in too much pain to even function.
I looked over at my aunt and uncle. She sobbed into his chest, and he wrapped his arms around her.
Where was someone to hold me?
Ana let out a scream that echoed around the room. She remained in the chair, but her head tipped back so that her chin stuck straight up, and both her arms and legs reached out as far as they would go. Even more eerily, she’d opened her eyes wide and stared, unblinking, at the ceiling.
“I can’t do this anymore.” I jumped up from my chair.
“Hale,” said Uncle Alre. “We need you here. Think of Eylin. Of Blake.”
Tears blurred my vision. I blinked them away, hating the weakness. “You think I haven’t?” I snapped, not caring that he was the King. “For the last few months, they’ve been all I could think about. Them and Ana.”
He ran his hands over his wife’s long hair as she shook in his embrace. “We need you here.”
“Why?” I asked, shaking inside. If I didn’t get away soon, my outer body would be trembling as well. “What can I do? What have I been able to do all this time?”
