Welcome to Adelheid Tour – Author Interview

Written All Over Her
By Mia Darien
Book Four in the Welcome to Adelheid series

Published: May 27, 2013

One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk

Marlowe’s life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her

with, she’s built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she

accepts that.

She accepts that she’ll never be able to be like “normal” people, even the supernatural

ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she’s okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the

mirror every day, her “okay” life gets turned upside down and she’s forced to confront

the past she’s been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there’s already more than one victim, the pressure’s on to stop

the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

“…This installment of the Adelheid series is dark, creepy, and extremely well written…”

“…Another winner from Mia Darien. It’s impossible for me to NOT fall in love with Darien’s carefully crafted protagonists…”
in eBook and paperback!

Interview

What’s your story? How did you get into writing?

Mia: This tour is to promote “Written All Over Her,” which is the fourth book in the Adelheid series, so I’m pushing the whole series. Adelheid is paranormal suspense, set in a modern world where vampires and werewolves and such have been recognized as legal citizens.

I got into writing because I’ve always been a reader. I wrote some little stuff here and there early on, but it was as a teenager that I read the adult fantasy fiction and started to think that I could do that, so I started trying to. I never stopped trying.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Mia: Work your butt off. Don’t stop trying. Be smart and be stubborn. If it’s in you, you’ll get there.

What are you working on now?

Mia: Oh, many, many things. I’ve plotted the fifth book in the Adelheid series and will start writing that soon, but not until I’ve finished the second short book in the Stories from Sanctuary City series and a paranormal romance for an anthology I’m orchestrating, which will see all its profits going to charity. I’m not talking too much about that one yet, but I’m very excited about it. It’ll be tough holding off Adelheid, though. Book five belongs to Vance and he’s getting impatient.

What has been the most challenging part of publishing or marketing your book?

Mia: Except for the butterflies in the stomach and electricity in the nerves that comes with a new release, the publishing of the book is easy. It’s the marketing that gets to me! I am not exactly a whiz at self-promotion, and not the most socially adept, so it’s been a challenge to find ways that I can put myself out there without overdoing it.

What has been your favorite part?

Mia: Actually having people read–and enjoy!–my stuff. That is just top of world stuff for me. A few times, readers have actually gone out of their way to email me and say how much they enjoyed my book. That is often the best part of my day.

Who are your favorite authors?

Mia: Despite some disappointment over “Red Country,” Joe Abercrombie is my favorite traditionally published author. Diantha Jones is my favorite self-published author. P. N. Elrod is my long time favorite paranormal. Then there’s the “Big Four” of my youth that got me hooked on fantasy and reading and subsequently writing, so they’ll always have a part of my heart: Piers Anthony, Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and Robert Jordan. But there are so many great authors and great books out there. It’s hard to pick favorites.

What gave you the idea for your current work?

Mia: Current as in newly released, which is Adelheid 4, then the idea partially started after reading Chelsea Cain’s “Heartsick.” I didn’t like the book all THAT much, but the Stockholm Syndrome-esque main character put a spark in my head. That led to Nykk, who started in my geeky hobby writing (play-by-email role-play games), but she didn’t work there. Eventually she morphed into who you see in the book out now.

If you could be any character in the book, which one would you be?

Mia: In my own book? Well, after all I put Nykk through, I don’t want to be her! *lol* I’d have to say Vance, even though he’s a guy, because he’s a were-tiger and I love tigers, and I put a lot of qualities in him that I admire in people, male or female. Posey Kai is fun too, though very mysterious.

What other books have you written and/or are working on for the future?

Mia: Oh, goodness. Well, there’s the whole Adelheid series, which is four full books and two short stories. I have two other series, which both only have their first books so far: Stories from Sanctuary City (post-apocalyptic erotic romance) and Turnabout Tales (modern gender-relationship-bending fairy tales). There’s also the historical romance “Deeper than Skin” and sci-fi romance “Steel Wings.” I write in two lines, Adelheid–which contains touches of romance but is mainly paranormal suspense–and then a variety of fantasy romances. I have more stories planned for all three series, as well as the paranormal romance anthology I mentioned, and an epic fantasy trilogy literally years in the making.

What’s your favorite quote?

Mia: There’s quite a few, but one I really like is from a song by my all time favorite band, Within Temptation: “We’re part of a story, part of a tale. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes insane. No one remembers how it began.”

What’s your favorite supernatural creature?

Mia: Were-tigers will always have a special place in my heart.
