If you’ve been writing for any length of time, you’ve probably been asked: “Why do you write?” In fact, you’ve probably been asked several times.
Why do I write?
Well, my friends say I’m a lot happier since I started writing. So, on reason I write is to make myself happy. If I didn’t find any joy in it, why bother?
It’s something I’ve always enjoyed. Before I started writing, I told stories. I loved telling stories so much that I wanted them to be real and would usually try to convince the hearer that my story was in fact true. Once, I had a friend convinced that my grandpa had built a robotic unicorn that I would ride when I went to his house.
Once I discovered the joy of writing stories, I went to town with it. I have spiral bound notebooks full of chapter stories I started writing when I was about nine years old. I kept that up until our family got a super-cool green screen computer and I started typing stories on floppy disks. As a teen and preteen, it was very cathartic; an outlet since I tended to keep my emotions to myself.
After I graduated college, I quit writing. I always felt that something was missing, but didn’t put two and two together for a long time. Now that I’m back to writing, my friends can see the difference in my happiness.
Anyway, I love to write. It’s awesome that people still love to read what I write. When I was in college, I would email chapters to friends, who would turn around and beg me for the next one. I suppose that was my first experience with self publishing!
If I can do this for a living, I would be thrilled. I’m busy with a home business and homeschooling my kids. I get up around 4:15 to write six days a week. I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t love it.
Why do you write? I’d love to hear from you!

May I just say that I’m absolutely blown away by the fact that you have a home business, homeschool, AND wake up at 4:15 six days a week so that you can write?
I applaud your dedication!
Thanks, Katya! 🙂 Some days it’s a challenge, but most of the time I’m having fun! Getting up early is a sacrifice, but it’s well worth it.
OMG, I remember writing my stories on floppy disks. I wish I had saved them so I could say the transformation of my writing. My story is similar to yours. I’ve been writing since I was 9. I can’t imagine my life without it. I’d feel like I have no purpose and just sleepwalk through life. Writing is life!
Now I am also struggling everyday to against my laziness of writing my new posts. It is really challenging. But after reading your share, it provides me more energy to cotinue my work. Thanks a lot Stacy!
Hi Stacy,
I found you thru Sue Neal’s reshare post on facebook. 🙂
Anyway, what do I write? I write almost anything. From writing a poetry to writing what frustrates me in my private journal…you bet I do write. And you’re right it is catharthic and therapeutic…coz you’re the only one reading it. Except of course you share it with friends only.
I have had a live journal since the year 2000. But even before that I was writing poetry at the age of 14 and later, writing on my old fashion diary that used to have a lock…remember those days? We have to lock that thing so good to make sure no prying eyes are looking at it.
Anyway, today…mainly I write for my business online.
I’m glad that you’re back to writing again. You should keep it up. It’s good for the soul.
Angela
Hey, Stacy!
I found this through Jeff Goins’ lovely link list on “Why I Write,” and I am so thrilled to have found your site! Your story is a familiar one, from the catharsis of floppy-disk fiction to the evident happiness I experience when writing regularly. I look forward to digging deeper into your blog!

Way to go Stacy! Keep writing. God bless~
Thank you so much, Maria!
Beautiful post Stacy!
And I thought I was busy! I admire you for all the novels your have written as I admire all novelists, because I lack the imagination that takes do that.
I have been writing since ever as well. As a matter a fact my previous post was a essay I had written when very young and recently found in a pile of old school papers. If you have time, check out my blog, and read both my “why-i-write” and the “Why we should be virtuous…the perspective of a 17 year old girl” posts.
Blessings and inspiration!
Thank you so much, Katina! I hope you had a happy new year! I will definitely take a look at your posts!
Hey Stacy,
Wow, you get up at 4:15 every morning so you can get some writing in. That’s so impressive and you definitely have got to love doing that girl. With those many books already under your belt I can see why.
I blog and although people consider that as writing I think of what you do as writing. I would love to be able to tell stories. I wrote a poem yesterday for my step-son, just something cute and fun. I’ve done that from time to time for different people who were very special to me.
I love helping people which is why I blog and it does give me pleasure so that’s my answer.
Keep up the excellent work because I do know this is your passion.
Merry Christmas Stacy and Happy New Year!
~Adrienne
Hi Adrienne,
I hope you had a merry Christmas! 🙂
I’ll bet your step-son loved that. I’ve never had much of a skill in poetry and I admire people who can write it. Also, as far as blogging goes, it is definitely writing. I find it more challenging than writing novels. I suppose that’s because I’d rather be writing fiction! 😉
Have a happy new year!
