Day Thirteen: Writing 150k Words in a Month #NaNoWriMo #My150NaNo

This time last week, I was close to two thousands words behind. Today, I start the week off 1,031 words ahead of schedule! It’s a much better way to start the week.

I discovered something interesting today as a result of being ahead. It’s a lot easier to write when ahead of target than behind. I had a hard time last week getting the final 2k words each day. Today, I went over by 513 words and it was fun again.

Why?

Because last week, I had to write extra. I needed to catch up. Today I could have actually stopped early because as far as the month’s word counts go I was already a little ahead of schedule. Then when I hit my word count goal, it was easy to keep going.

Why?

This time it was a challenge. I wanted to see if I could get ahead. Getting ahead is a lot more fun than trying to play catch up.

Don’t know if it works for others, but I think it spurs on my naturally competitive nature. I’ll take it!

A side note:

Today’s actual word count is 6453, but the image shows a little higher because I wrote some notes in part of the file that isn’t part of the story. But the total word count (61,031) is still correct, because you’ll notice the box is checked to only count the words going into the story.

Sorry to go on about it…I just don’t want it to look like anything is fishy with my word counts! My goal is to make 150,000 words this month completely honestly. That’s why I mentioned a spell check discrepancy earlier this month.

But I have written 61,0131 words in my story so far this month. Not bad for eleven days! (I take Saturdays off and so far haven’t used any for making up words.)

I find it easier to write ahead when on target as well. I don’t know why, I guess it feels a bit like cheating and you know getting more done than planned.

    1. That’s a good analogy! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
