Excerpt

It had broken my dead, unbeating heart to leave him. But it wasn’t as though I had another choice. I’d spent my entire life, nearly two and a half centuries, trying to find a way to get myself on the throne after my father had removed our family from it. I couldn’t drop all of that for a varsity football player. At least that was my story.

The truth was that I hadn’t been the same since I walked away from Tanner, giving him no explanation. Sure, I acted exactly the same. I continued to do whatever I had to do to get on the throne. I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from that. But deep down, I ached to be with Tanner. I had spent hours thinking up scenario after scenario of ways that I could bring him back into my life. If I could go from nothing to ruling vampires everywhere, I could find a way to be with Tanner once I was in charge. Once on the throne, I could do whatever I wanted.

“Samantha. Did you hear me?”

I blinked a couple of times and looked back at Vince. “You asked if Alexis is ready?”

A slow smile spread across his face. He ruffled his short, spiky hair. “No, my pet. You asked that. I said that it’s time to kidnap her. I’ve had Adam, Danny, and Luke watching her and that boy. Is he what you were just daydreaming about?”

I glared at him. “I was thinking about my previous assignment. You sent me to set everything up for this. It sounds like I was successful if she’s ready for us to abduct her. What have those losers reported about the situation?”

“Do you remember the prince, Clifford Montgomery, who Alexis was engaged to marry when she was a toddler?”

“Yes. Go on.” What did this have to do with anything?

“He showed up a little while after you left. At first I thought that was going to complicate matters, but it ended up working to our benefit. The girl kissed your boy and Clifford took off in a mad fury, sending her right into your boy’s arms. They’ve been spending all kinds of time together. He’s been taking her outside of Delphic Cove, which is going to work to our benefit. We can run in and grab her. It would be a lot more difficult in her little town with prying eyes everywhere.”

I nodded, trying desperately not to show my irritation. The thought of Tanner spending time with—and kissing—Alexis made my cool vampire blood boil. I wanted to kill her myself, even though I knew that I had set up the situation for them to meet on my own accord. I had tried to set up other guys for her to fall for, so that we could abduct her, but Tanner was the only one who had worked out because he trusted me.

Looking back at Vince, I noticed that he was smiling. “What?” I snapped.

“You’ll probably be happy to know that we’ll need to take the boy too.”

My betraying eyes lit up.

Vince laughed. “I knew you’d be happy. I’m even going to let you abduct him personally. Adam and the others are going to take Alexis and weaken her so that when I get my hands on her, she’ll tell me everything I want to know. In the meantime, I’ll need someone to keep that boy occupied so that he doesn’t run off and tell anyone where Alexis is. You can take him anywhere and do anything to him. He’ll be all yours again for a while.”

I could hardly believe my ears. I wanted to jump up and kiss Vince in gratitude. I had been missing Tanner so much, and now he was going to let me have more time with him. I hadn’t understood it, but Vince seemed amused by my love for Tanner. I had tried to hide it from him, but of course no one could hide anything from Vince Moretti, and he always found out. He seemed to think that it was cute, and he never ridiculed me as I had expected him to. Now this. “Why are you doing this for me, Vince?”

He leaned back into his chair. “You’ve always been so good to me, Samantha. It’s no secret that we’ve both always had plenty of vampires on the side over our decades together. We both want the same thing—to take down the king and queen, and then sit in their places. We’re perfect for each other in those roles. Dear, we couldn’t do it without each other. Believe it or not, I want you to be happy.”

Staring at him, I took in what he’d just said.

Leaning toward me, he took my hand and kissed it. “I’ve left Samantha Erikson speechless. That’s no easy task.”
